9/19 Auto-x in Eau Claire

Opps...Neon goes crash...

On the way to Autobahn Country Club w/ NASA
Damage to car...
The spindle/steering kuncle busted where the tie rod mounts..

So race #1, about 5 laps in, the car is oversteering a bit more than usual.  Coming into turn 3, I typically put my driver side tire about 2" over the curb/apex run off.  For whatever reason this time I was all the way over it.  This particular curb is rather high, say 3~4"....this forced the driver side of the car up in the air and the car spun sideways, I corrected and got the car pointed in the right direction, unfortunatly my trajectory still sent sliding sideways into the tire wall.

Car has a krinkled front fender, broken side view mirror, snapped spindle/steering knuckle, busted tail light, bent rear laterial arm, and pushed the rear quarter pannel in enough to where the trunk doesn't close.

Video from earlier this summer...

July 28th, Autobahn Country Club, Joliet Il. w/ NASA
This is the last race of the weekend, a 40 minute sprint.

The video is about 30 minutes into the race, there is a yellow flag thrown for two whole laps, allowing the entire field to regroup.  There is some drama w/ some of the Spec Porsche 944's.

Corcoran Lion's park is located just outside the loop, just west of I494 and north of Highway 55. This event is the closest to the metro, and a really short drive for all the westies on here.

The surface is gravel and some clay, not grass over dirt.

The venue is designed for events, so spectating and parking are excellent.

The event is a National Challenge event, which means that contingency payouts are available. This means that if you're driving a VW or Subaru, you could actually win money. Must Sign Up before the event.
VW: Payout per class: $200 1st, $100 2nd.
Subaru: Payout per class (SA,PA,M4): $300 1st, $200 2nd, $100 3rd.

You don't need any special tires to run at this venue. In fact, I've run on high-performance summer tires with good results.

FYI! Some changes from our standard events.
1. EVERY run will count!
2. No passengers.
3. Bring your own BBQ on site after timed runs. (announcement to follow)
4. Possible Fun / Instructional runs after BBQ.

Corvettes of MN Auto-X

Very fricken fast!  This is the 1st auto-x I can remember hitting the rev-limiter in 2nd gear...which is somewhere above 65mph!  I killed off one of my Kuhmo v710s...apparently the ABS works but not good enough...doh!

I got SCREWED by the class bumping....there was one SM and two SMF's....so SMF bumps into SM...meaning Kevin Beck's AWD 380whp subie was in my class!!! IF there was three SM's, I would have gotten 1st and Kevin would have been bumped into SSM. ARG!
14th fastest car of the day over all (by raw time...), 1st in SM.

I got some Data Aquisition software for my Droid cell phone...I am still figuring it out, but I am quickly finding out it's limitations.

Jack Pine Sprints 2010

Back from a great weekend at BIR. I had butterflies in my stomach watching the green flag drop on the 1st official SCCA race in over 10 years. I had four good races, 20 some cars in my heat, three in my class, ITA (Improved Touring A), had some really good play time battling others, especially the Miata's (to which I am now toughly convinced that Spec Miata drivers are all crazy!).   I got three 2nd place finishes, and a 3rd (due to a black flag cuz of noise).  I killed off two Kuhmo v710's, and other than that I didn't pick a tool up all weekend, the Neon did really well! Thanks to Dave Kapon who helped get the car ready for these past two races!

Oh btw...there is some sort of lame rule of 102db at the track, I didn't see it in the suplimental rules, I had never heard of that before, didn't happen at the NASA race, nor the Chump race.....oh and btw, that rule doesn't apparently apply to drag cars! :S

More on BIR July 4th weekend

Come to the races!
We are up to nearly 100 entries for the SCCA Jack Pine Sprint races at BIR. This is the first SCCA sanctioned races at BIR since 2001. Land O’ Lakes region is thrilled to be back racing again and it
shows - 2/3’s of the racers are from Minnesota. This is a “Quad” format regional race (2 races on Saturday and 2 races on Sunday). The schedule has 6 different race groups. We have
a large Spec Miata group forming as well as a Big Vintage race group. The other classes range from Spec Racer Ford to Gt Lite. A whole lot of variety.
If you have ever thought about racing this is a great weekend to see what SCCA is all about and talk to drivers and the BIR school representatives to see how simple it has become to get onto the track.

BIR also has the Show and Go drag races, fireworks, live music and even a car show. Admission is $20 per day.

We can still use more volunteers to stage the event. If you are planning on volunteering this weekend, please makes sure you register on motorsportsreg (www.scca-lol.org/bir-registration) or contact Jim
Gillen (jim(at)gillengroup(dot)com) or Kathy Gillen (kathy(at)gillengroup(dot)com) so we can get you on the list. If you aren't on the list, you may have to pay to get into the track.

We hope to see you there!

SCCA Road Racing @ Brainerd Intl. Raceway

Land O'Lakes Jack Pine Sprints
July 3-4, 2010

SCCA Racing Returns To Brainerd Raceway July 2-4, Dual event includes Show & Go on the Drag Strip, Classic Car Show

The Sports Car Club of America's Land O' Lakes Region will bring its exciting brand of road racing to Brainerd International Raceway July 2-4 during its Jack Pine Sprints. This will be the first SCCA race event at the track in ten years.

The four-race regional event will be held on BIR's new 2.5-mile Competition Road Course and will feature SCCA's familiar Formula cars, sport racers and GTs. Cars in the Vintage Class, including classic Corvettes and Mustangs, will run wheel to wheel with Morgans, TVRs and Lolas as well. This is super competitive racing that highlights the skills of very talented drivers. For race fans who aren't familiar with road racing, this event is an excellent introduction.

The Fourth of July weekend will be a great chance for fans to enjoy both road racing AND drag racing. In addition to the Jack Pine Sprints, the drag strip will be alive with the unmistakable sound of muscle cars launching from the drag strip starting line during the 24th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Show & Go, featuring the second race of the Outlaw Street Car Series.

In addition to the racing taking place on the race tracks, there will also be plenty of action off the tracks, too. All fans at BIR will be treated to a classic car show behind the drag strip grandstands, live music on Saturday night and fireworks. A single ticket gets you into BIR where you can go back and forth between both events at no extra cost. And for those who may be concerned with the weather (rain can delay drag racing), the SCCA will race rain or shine.

For more information, check out the BIR website at brainerdraceway.com or the SCCA Land O’Lakes region website at http://www.scca-lol.org/registration/

Chump Car Challenge: Iowa Speed Way

I joined Slugwerks for this event, since our own chump car is in need of repair.  Unfortunatly the motor threw a rod 30 minutes into the race.  We swapped the motor, but could not get it to fire.  At 2:15am, we called it quits.  All in all it was a fantastic race.  After 24 hours of racing the top two cars were on the SAME lap!

Back from Black Hawk Farms.

The "new motor" in the neon held together.  Block at 115k miles, the head was completely redone, port matched the intake ports.  Practice session, two qualifying sessions, and three 40 minute races.  I placed 1st, but only because there wasn't anyone else in my class, so I attempted to play w/ the Spec Miata guys.  Saturday I broke the track record for my class, then broke it again on Sunday.

Race #3 started w/ just a slight drizzle, the kind where if you put your wipers on delay, the wipers are going too fast, therefore most of us kept our dry race tires on.  1/3 of they way into the race the heavens open up and the wipers and full speed & defroster on full weren't able to keep up.  I couldn't see the race car 5' in front of me.  Wheel spin in 4th gear and drifting (ice racing skills came in handy).  Those that didn't already come in early were black flagged where we sat in the pit lane for 10 minutes, then followed the pace car for three laps (who was faster than the race cars on slicks), the last 3 laps were back to wet race speeds.

Thanks to Dave Kapaun & Chris for helping getting the car ready and assisting at the track!

Chump Car Challenge @ BIR report

I posted a synopsis of the weekend on the Team Short Bus Blog

CHUMP CAR

ing to Brainerd this weekend. Our Team: "Team Short Bus" has turned a 1995 VW Golf w/ 196k miles on it into a race car! In short, this is an endurance race for cars that cost no more than $500 (not counting wheels/tires/saftey equipment). Read all about the car's build on my other blog:
http://team-short-bus.blogspot.com/   ....be sure to look at all the archived posts as well.

I am a real race car driver now!

I now am able to race wheel-to-wheel at NASA events! Woot! However I have 0 races under my belt, because I was unable to complete or start the races...the Neon took a dump and would over heat. Cylinder #2 was pumping air into the cooling system, vaporizing the coolant causing it to over heat. Although, during one of our earlier sessions the neon did put down a 2min flat lap time, which gave me a track record.

Sunday, having no car to race, we took Michelle's mostly stock VW Golf w/ 196k miles on it took all the crap out of it, bleed the brakes, put numbers on it and ran it in "Time Trials F"...the little Golf threw down a lap time of 2min 14sec, a NASA record for BIR (never mind there were no other TTF cars out there, but that is besides the point!)!

NASA @ BIR this weekend.....

Apparently the staff is a bit light for this weekend's race....so if anyone wants to come up and volunteer that would be awesome, working the event is the best seat in the house, next to being in the driver seat that is.....The ultimate street car shoot out is going on at the same time, so if you like to watch drag cars......Also spectating amateur road racing. there will be worker rides & track time touring. NASA also has a work 2 play program....work 2-days and you get one day to play for free. Email me or Dave Royce (see below) for more info.

MOWOG 1&2 (first auto-x of the season)

Rounds 1 & 2 are over with...first auto-x of the season (except for the Novice school held 2 wks prior).  SMF (Street Modified Front wheel drive), again this year is going to be tough battle; I barely got 2nd both days.  Saturday, I left the Kuhmo Xs's on because of the temprature, Sunday I broke out the Kuhmo v710 race rubber.

I really need to get heavier springs under the car...

The GTI is upgraded w/ S2 Metal Werks header; the only header dyno proven to gain power on n/a VR6 motors.  It is such a pretty piece it is a shame to cover it up.  New Image Coatings of Lino Lakes applied thier ceramic coating to it.
