Land O'Lakes Jack Pine Sprints

SCCA Racing Returns To Brainerd Raceway July 2-4, Dual event includes Show & Go on the Drag Strip, Classic Car Show
The Sports Car Club of America's Land O' Lakes Region will bring its exciting brand of road racing to Brainerd International Raceway July 2-4 during its Jack Pine Sprints. This will be the first SCCA race event at the track in ten years.
The four-race regional event will be held on BIR's new 2.5-mile Competition Road Course and will feature SCCA's familiar Formula cars, sport racers and GTs. Cars in the Vintage Class, including classic Corvettes and Mustangs, will run wheel to wheel with Morgans, TVRs and Lolas as well. This is super competitive racing that highlights the skills of very talented drivers. For race fans who aren't familiar with road racing, this event is an excellent introduction.
The Fourth of July weekend will be a great chance for fans to enjoy both road racing AND drag racing. In addition to the Jack Pine Sprints, the drag strip will be alive with the unmistakable sound of muscle cars launching from the drag strip starting line during the 24th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Show & Go, featuring the second race of the Outlaw Street Car Series.
In addition to the racing taking place on the race tracks, there will also be plenty of action off the tracks, too. All fans at BIR will be treated to a classic car show behind the drag strip grandstands, live music on Saturday night and fireworks. A single ticket gets you into BIR where you can go back and forth between both events at no extra cost. And for those who may be concerned with the weather (rain can delay drag racing), the SCCA will race rain or shine.
For more information, check out the BIR website at brainerdraceway.com or the SCCA Land O’Lakes region website at http://www.scca-lol.org/registration/

Chump Car Challenge: Iowa Speed Way
I joined Slugwerks for this event, since our own chump car is in need of repair. Unfortunatly the motor threw a rod 30 minutes into the race. We swapped the motor, but could not get it to fire. At 2:15am, we called it quits. All in all it was a fantastic race. After 24 hours of racing the top two cars were on the SAME lap!

Back from Black Hawk Farms.
The "new motor" in the neon held together. Block at 115k miles, the head was completely redone, port matched the intake ports. Practice session, two qualifying sessions, and three 40 minute races. I placed 1st, but only because there wasn't anyone else in my class, so I attempted to play w/ the Spec Miata guys. Saturday I broke the track record for my class, then broke it again on Sunday.
Race #3 started w/ just a slight drizzle, the kind where if you put your wipers on delay, the wipers are going too fast, therefore most of us kept our dry race tires on. 1/3 of they way into the race the heavens open up and the wipers and full speed & defroster on full weren't able to keep up. I couldn't see the race car 5' in front of me. Wheel spin in 4th gear and drifting (ice racing skills came in handy). Those that didn't already come in early were black flagged where we sat in the pit lane for 10 minutes, then followed the pace car for three laps (who was faster than the race cars on slicks), the last 3 laps were back to wet race speeds.
Thanks to Dave Kapaun & Chris for helping getting the car ready and assisting at the track!

CHUMP CAR
ing to Brainerd this weekend. Our Team: "Team Short Bus" has turned a 1995 VW Golf w/ 196k miles on it into a race car! In short, this is an endurance race for cars that cost no more than $500 (not counting wheels/tires/saftey equipment). Read all about the car's build on my other blog:

I am a real race car driver now!

I now am able to race wheel-to-wheel at NASA events! Woot! However I have 0 races under my belt, because I was unable to complete or start the races...the Neon took a dump and would over heat. Cylinder #2 was pumping air into the cooling system, vaporizing the coolant causing it to over heat. Although, during one of our earlier sessions the neon did put down a 2min flat lap time, which gave me a track record.
Sunday, having no car to race, we took Michelle's mostly stock VW Golf w/ 196k miles on it took all the crap out of it, bleed the brakes, put numbers on it and ran it in "Time Trials F"...the little Golf threw down a lap time of 2min 14sec, a NASA record for BIR (never mind there were no other TTF cars out there, but that is besides the point!)!

NASA @ BIR this weekend.....
Apparently the staff is a bit light for this weekend's race....so if anyone wants to come up and volunteer that would be awesome, working the event is the best seat in the house, next to being in the driver seat that is.....The ultimate street car shoot out is going on at the same time, so if you like to watch drag cars......Also spectating amateur road racing. there will be worker rides & track time touring. NASA also has a work 2 play program....work 2-days and you get one day to play for free. Email me or Dave Royce (see below) for more info.
