SCCA 2012 Road Racing Schedule

There also will be a driver's school at BIR the week of Memorial Day.

ICE RACING 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!

As of this week there is just over 6 inches of ice so far!  The lack of snow fall is going to make things interesting!   One of the big changes for this year is that the Rubber-to-Ice racers (no studs, just snow tires) do NOT need a cage!!!!  So any old car will do!

Winter Rally Series

The website for the ASCC web site for the 2011-12 Winter Rally Series has been updated. Not all links are working yet, but at least the schedule is up.

The first event is less than two weeks away, on Dec. 10th. Competitors and workers should get in touch with Clarence Westberg:

clarence.westberg@gmail.com
http://arrowheadscc.org/wrs2012/index.htm

For those of you not familar w/ TSD's....Time Speed Distance....they are kinda like a rally, where you are give "stage notes" and you need to get from point A to point B with in a certain amount of time.  If you are early or late, you loose points.  It gets to be quite challenging, especially when one makes a wrong turn, and now one has to make up that "lost time".  Most of these are done on "back roads" in country.

222k and counting....

So it isn't racing related other than this car has gone to one rally-x, and has prolly 100 miles of doing laps at IIRA (International Ice Racing Association) events but.....The daily driver/beater Jetta recently turned 222,222 miles.  Far as I know the motor has never been opened up.  I get excessive oil vapor in the crank case breather, it knocks a bit, and the transmission has a bearing whine, but it just keeps going!

Stealerships...

$61 for 12 little bolts from the dealer!  Aparently they are made of Un-obtain-ium!
They are Dodge parts for pete's sake!  For all those who think foreign cars have expensive parts can go take a leap.

Brand new flexplate & clutch bolts for the Neon.  New clutch, used flexplate, new motor mounts, Prothane motor mount inserts (thanks John G.!).

Don't buy from HugoAutoParts!

So I purchased a neon Cylinder head from them.  I got it and gasket matched the intake & exhaust ports, then had it taken to another machine shop to swap the valve springs and hot tank it again (to clean the aluminum shavings).  That machinist said it had a warp to it and had to shave .003 off of it.  One of the bolt holes for the cam bearing cap was stripped.  Also there was an exhaust valve that had a slight bend to it.  Plus they coat the head in some sort of spray paint that comes off w/ brake cleaner.  That machinst said it looks as if they took the head to a belt sander.

I was under the gun to get the car ready for the NASA event at Road America so I just had that machinest fix it.  Hugo won't do anything for me cuz, they didn't inspect it or do the repair work.

Nice.....another $250 down the drain.

Dog Daze Rally-x review

The SCCA-LOL Dog Daze Rally-X, sponsored by NOS Energy Drink, took place on August 21st. The location was hay field located just outside of Pine City. The land was rented to LOL by member and rally-x competitor. Many people camped on the property and partied the night prior.

22 competitors showed up to compete. The cars varied from a plethora of the Subaru name plate, VW Golfs (one of which has been campaigning in Chump Car & 24 Hours of Lemons endurance racing), a Ford Ranger, a Audi V8 Quattro, a future SCCA ITB car among others. Another interesting turn of fate, an old friend has returned home. Mark Utecht's X-rally car has changed hands again. After spending some years on the east coast competing, the Subaru WRX rally car is now back in MN, driven by a road racer name Steven Michael who plans to turn away from tarmac and towards gravel for a while.

There was four run-sets, each run set contained two runs. The best run of each run-set was added for a total time. In the Modified 2-wheel-drive class 1st, and 3rd place were separated by 0.382 seconds! 195.369 seconds for 1st, 195.654 seconds for 2nd, and 195.751 for 3rd. Modified 4-wheel-drive actually had an unprecedented tie for 1st place of 196.917 seconds; which is may be the first time that has happened in LOL Rally-X history.
This event had two different families doing battle with each other. A father & daughter, team Freund competed against each other in their Subaru. This time age and wisdom concurred youth and exuberance. Brother & sister, team Martin duked it out in a mostly stock VW Golf with 220,000 miles on it. The little bother put up a good fight for his first time competing; but lost out to his older sister, by 0.929 seconds!
The next rally-x will be held Sept. 25th at the same location. Spectators and more competitors are welcome. Watch the forums and facebook for more details.

Not long after the battle at BIR2, the Chumeons Golf was repaired and sent out to battle in an hay field. The mighty Golf took 1st in Modified 2wd (just barely beating the turbo charged honda del sol). This event was held in Pine City, MN.

make weight....

According to SCCA rules the neon needs to weigh 2650lbs coming off of the track (which is fricken lame, if you ask me, especially when miatas need only be 2200lbs or something, anyways I digress)....w/ me, all my gear, and nearly a full take of fuel I come across the scales at 2590.   So instead of adding lead weights in the floor of the passenger seat I am adding back in a "spare tire".  John "Fossco" made a heavy duty mount for the wheel, one that will survive mutliple g-forces.

Ojibwe Forest Rally Needs You!

Volunteers still needed for the Ojibwe Forests Rally Weekend. Want to be part of the action - Sign up Now!

Don’t just imagine… BE THERE! Want the best seat in the house? The best way to spectate is to volunteer. Sign up to work today! It takes an enormous commitment of time and people to organize a rally. You can get in on the excitement and see the racing up close by volunteering as an event worker.

2011 OFR Weekend Schedule will be published here as soon as it’s available.
Most workers get their own intersection in the woods to watch the cars. There are numerous opportunities to work with a group of your friends. Your group or club could volunteer to work together on a stage. Work at spectator areas and get the best parking and watching locations! Fill out our worker registration form.

We have openings for:
Course marshals: See the cars up close and at racing speeds by helping time the cars in and out of checkpoints, guarding access to closed forest roads, and assisting with spectator stages. For the beginning worker, this is a great introduction!

Ham radio operators: Get in on the race communications by transmitting vital information during the progress of the race to the control operator. Previous race experience is not necessary; just a willingness to help keep workers and competitors up-to-date.

Control Workers: Ensure that the times for completion of each stage are accurate. Championships have been won and lost on one tenth of a second. Mathematical ability is not required, just a steady hand on
the watch.

Medical personnel: Although there has never been a serious accident at the event, we plan for emergencies with qualified rescue crews.

Doctors, nurses, EMT’s and First Responders are needed for the safety crews. You can work medical and another specialty too.

Course set up/take down: All the forest roads seen in competition need to be carefully inspected the morning of the event. You can actually drive the rally stages as you put up and take down banner
tape that warns the general public the event is taking place.

More information at http://ojibweforestrally.com or sign up at
http://www.rallymasterpro.com/
Sign up now while there is still time!!!
Thank You!

Road Racing Help?

Do you have an interest in Road Racing? We are looking for some volunteers for our up coming events at BIR. Here is a link to some detailed job discriptions:

http://scca-lol.org/forum/index.php?topic=884.0

Land O' Lakes Region SCCA is always looking for more volunteers to help stage our Road Racing events at BIR.

We have a Double Regional race (with Vintage car racing) at BIR July 9th and 10th. We also will be staffing the SCCA Pro-Race Weekend over Labor Day Weekend. The Pro weekend will include Trans Am, Playboy Cup Miata's, Pro Spec Racer Ford and Pro Formula Enterprise.

Here are some position descriptions. Contact Kathy Gillen (info below) if you can help our our club with your time. Nearly all of the positions do not require any previous experience. We provide free admission, free camping, meals and beverages to our volunteers as well as whole a bunch of gratitude- you will enjoy being a part of these events!

Our volunteers can also do the Lunch-time track touring at no charge.

Radio Equipment Chief: Responsible for ensuring that radios are available and distributed to corners, safety and administration staff. You’ll check radios out in the morning, then collect them at the end of the day and make sure they are on their chargers for the night.

Equipment Chief: Responsible for getting the brooms, fire equipment, and water jugs out to the corners in the morning and pick them up at night. Sunday evening you’ll help put equipment away.

Course Marshal: During the event, you’ll flat tow drivers in (using your truck.) Also respond to requests from Control or Flag Chief to handle various tasks during the day. May also assist Equipment Chief as needed.

Tech Assistant #1: If you’ve helped tech cars before and during races, we need your help! You’ll assist the Chief of Tech to ensure cars have required equipment to race safely.

Tech Assistant #2: No experience necessary. You are organized and willing to help with the paperwork and forms. This is an important position because you’ll dramatically speed up the Tech Process by freeing up the Scrutineers.

Pit. Grid, and Paddock: No experience necessary. You’ll help the various chiefs with traffic control, and manage the entry and exit of cars. You’ll help drivers fasten straps and equipment as needed.

Corner Workers: According to some, this is the best seat in the house! You’ll use flags to help drivers pass, assist the safety crew as needed, and be prepared to keep the drivers safe. No experience necessary. Many drivers also work corners because it helps them better understand the turning points. If you intend to become a driver, work corners to build your expertise!

Runner: Pick up and deliver lunches, assist the Flag Chief with radios, and do many odd jobs and tasks that require flexibility. This is an extremely important job!

For more information on any volunteer position please contact Kathy Gillen at 763-241-8010 or email kathy@gillengroup.com
